Knowing a user’s location in an Android app can be extremely useful. Users take their devices everywhere and are constantly using them on the go, and as developers we can capitalize on that by providing a more contextual experience based on their current location.

Accessing the current location of an Android device is easier than ever, but it can still be a little tricky, especially for the first time. What follows is a guide on the very basics of retrieving a user’s current location and displaying it with a marker on a map. The project files for this project are available on GitHub , but follow along and in a few minutes we’ll build a super simple location finder!

This is a somewhat complex topic in Android, but these step-by-step guidelines should explain everything you need. If you would like to learn more about the fundamentals of Android programming that lead up to this, please check out my Android Development Track on Treehouse.

If you've lost a device, you can use Android Device Manager to find its approximate location on a map and when it was last used. When Android Device Manager locates your device, that device will get a notification.

Before you can use Android Device Manager to locate your device: Your device's location access need to be turned on and be signed in to your Google Account. Android Device Manager won't work for devices that are turned off or that don't have a mobile data or Wi-Fi connection.

Sharing your location on Android is a simple but often overlooked feature. We waste time trying to describe where we are to friends and family, especially when in new places, and it can take a while to get the message across. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Sending your exact location is quick and accurate with Android, meaning you can spend less time talking about where you are, and more time actually experiencing it. Let’s take a look at a few different ways to do this with your preferred messaging apps.

Go to the WhatsApp conversation in which you wish to send your location, tap the attach (paperclip) button, then touch “location”. WhatsApp will determine your location (within a few meters or so). Then all you need to do is tap “send your current location” and the address will be entered into the conversation. How cool is that?

You can send your current location at any time, but the longer you wait on the "send location" page, the more accurate the information will be as WhatsApp hones in on your exact wherabouts.
